How much does UpWork take from client?

UpWork takes a percentage of the client’s paycheck, typically 3-5%. This percentage ranges depending on the job, but is always taken from the client’s first paycheck. UpWork also charges clients an hourly fee, which ranges from $12 to $75. This fee is charged regardless of whether or not the client completes the job.

PRO TIP: Upwork takes a 20% fee from clients for the first $500 that they spend on a freelancer. This fee decreases to 10% for any subsequent spending by the client.

The majority of clients complete their jobs within the agreed upon timeframe, but there are a small number of clients who take significantly longer than expected. In total, UpWork takes an average of about 10% of the client’s paycheck, or about $120.
