What is layer blending mode in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 23, 2022 @ 8:09 pm

Layer blending mode is a feature of Photoshop that allows you to combine layers of different colors, depths, and opacity to create complex effects. You can use layer blending mode to create realistic textures, create a blurred background for an image, or to create a composite image.

To use layer blending mode, first select the layers you want to combine. Then, click the blending mode button (the one with the three lines).

The blending mode buttons are located at the bottom of the layer palette. The following blending modes are available:.

Normal: The layers are combined using the default color and blending mode settings.

Add: The top layer is added to the bottom layer.

Subtract: The bottom layer is added to the top layer.

PRO TIP: Layer blending modes in Photoshop can radically change the way your image looks. Be sure to experiment with different modes to find the one that best suits your needs.

Lighten: The lightest color is added to the top layer.

Darken: The darkest color is added to the top layer.

Multiply: The layers are combined using the default color and blending mode settings, but the opacity of the top layer is multiplied by the opacity of the bottom layer.

Screen: The layers are combined using the default color and blending mode settings, but the opacity of the top layer is multiplied by the screen value (100% by default).

Overlay: The top layer is added to the bottom layer, but the bottom layer is masked so that only the top layer is visible.

Blend: The layers are combined using the default color and blending mode settings.

These blending modes are explained in more detail below. The bottom layer is unaffected. The top layer is affected.
