How Do You Blend a Background in Canva?

Last updated on December 3, 2022 @ 5:56 pm

As a general rule of thumb, you should always use the background-blend-mode property in conjunction with the background-image property. That way, if your background image is unavailable or if it fails to load, the browser can display a solid color background instead.

With that said, there are four main ways to blend a background image in Canva:

PRO TIP: If you are not careful, it is easy to accidentally blend your background in Canva. This can make your design look messy and unprofessional. To avoid this, be sure to use the “lock” feature on your background layer before blending any other layers.
  1. Normal mode: The default blending mode. In normal mode, the top layer is placed on top of the bottom layer without any transparency.
  2. Multiply mode: In multiply mode, the top layer is multiplied with the bottom layer.

This results in a darker image.

  3. Screen mode: In screen mode, the top layer is screened with the bottom layer. This results in a lighter image.
  4. Overlay mode: Overlay mode is a combination of multiply and screen modes. It multiplies the darker colors and screens the lighter colors.

To blend your background image using one of these modes, simply follow these steps:

  1. Step 1: Open Canva and create a new design. For the purposes of this tutorial, we’ll be creating a Facebook cover photo.
  2. Step 2: Find an image that you want to use as your background. For this example, we’ll be using this beautiful landscape photo.
