Kerning

Kerning is the process of adjusting the spacing between characters in a proportional font, usually to achieve a visually pleasing result. Kerning adjusts the space between individual letter forms, while tracking adjusts spacing uniformly over a range of characters. In a well-kerned font, the two-dimensional blank spaces between each pair of characters all have a visually similar area. The term kerning originated in metal type, where it referred to adjusting the space between letters by physically moving them.

In digital type, kerning is typically accomplished by increasing or decreasing the space between specific character pairs using software.

Although the word kerning is most often used in reference to horizontal text spacing, it can also refer to vertical text spacing.
