How Does Canva Detect Color?

Color is one of the first things we notice when we see something. It can affect our moods, emotions, and even our behavior. That’s why businesses take color so seriously when designing their products and branding.

Canva is a design platform that allows users to create graphics and designs for both digital and print media. A key feature of Canva is its wide selection of colors, which users can access through the color picker tool.

But how does Canva detect color?

The answer lies in the way our eyes perceive color. When we look at an object, the light from that object enters our eyes and hits the retina (the back part of the eye). The retina contains cells called cones, which are sensitive to different wavelengths of light.

PRO TIP: Canva may detect color in uploaded images and use the colors to generate a color palette for the design. This could lead to unexpected colors in the design.

There are three types of cones: red, green, and blue. Each type of cone is sensitive to a different range of wavelengths. The red cones are most sensitive to long wavelengths (red), the green cones are most sensitive to medium wavelengths (green), and the blue cones are most sensitive to short wavelengths (blue).

When all three types of cones are stimulated equally, we perceive the color as white. When two cones are stimulated more than the third, we perceive the color as a shade of gray. And when one cone is stimulated more than the other two, we perceive the color as that particular color.

So, when you use the color picker tool in Canva, your eyes are seeing a particular wavelength of light that is being emitted from your computer screen (or phone screen). Your brain then processes this information and tells you what color you’re looking at.
