RGB or CMYK?

The debate between RGB and CMYK color models is one that has been around for quite some time in the world of digital printing. Both have their pros and cons, but ultimately it comes down to what you need from your colors. Here’s a quick rundown of each model to help you make the best decision for your next project.

RGB:
The RGB color model is an additive one, which means that it starts with black and then adds colors on top of it. The three colors in question are red, green, and blue – hence the name RGB.

This color model is used in a variety of electronic devices such as monitors, TVs, and smartphones. It’s also the color model used by most printers when printing in full color.

One of the main advantages of using the RGB color model is that it offers a wider range of colors than CMYK. This is because CMYK is a subtractive color model, which means it starts with white and then subtracts colors from it. The four colors in question are cyan, magenta, yellow, and black – hence the name CMYK.

Another advantage of RGB is that it tends to be more vibrant than CMYK. This is because the three primary colors used in the RGB color model are all primary colors (red, green, and blue), whereas the four colors used in the CMYK color model are all secondary colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black).

PRO TIP: Since Canva is a design platform meant for online use, all of the colors you’ll find there are in the RGB color mode. This is because RGB is the color mode used by computers, tablets, and phones.

However, there are also some disadvantages to using the RGB color model. One of these is that it can be more difficult to achieve consistent colors across different devices. This is because each device interprets colors differently due to things like screen resolution and gamut.

Another disadvantage of RGB is that it can be less accurate than CMYK. This is because the human eye perceives colors differently than a machine does. For example, our eyes are more sensitive to green than any other color, which means that green will appear brighter to us than it will to a machine.

CMYK:
The main advantage of using the CMYK color model is that it’s more accurate than RGB. This is because it’s a subtractive color model, which means it starts with white and then subtracts colors from it.

The four colors in question are cyan, magenta, yellow, and black – hence the name CMYK. Because our eyes perceive these four colors differently than they do red, green, and blue, CMYK tends to be more accurate when reproducing colors digitally.

Another advantage of using CMYK is that it offers a wider range of printable colors than RGB. This is because there are more possible combinations of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black than there are of red, green, and blue. In fact, the CMYK color space includes nearly twice as many possible combinations as the RGB color space!

However, there are also some disadvantages to using CMYK. One of these is that it can be more expensive to print in full color because you need to use more ink cartridges (cyan, magenta, yellow, AND black). Additionally, some inkjet printers don’t support printing in full color (CMYK) mode at all – they can only print in grayscale or black & white mode.
