Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems. Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants.”

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake, who were friends and former classmates at the University of Ottawa. Lütke is the CEO of Shopify.

Weinand is the COO and Lake is the Chief Product Officer. In 2006, Shopify launched its own platform after previously using osCommerce.

According to Shopify’s 2018 Q3 report, gross merchandise volume (GMV) was $13.8 billion USD, an increase of 58% from $8.7 billion USD in 2017. In 2018 Q2 report, Shopify announced that it had 876,500 merchants using its platform as of June 30, 2018, an increase of 60% from 548,500 merchants in 2017.

Shopify went public on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on May 21, 2015. At market close on that day, Shopify had an initial public offering (IPO) of $131 million USD. On July 1st 2015 Shopify acquired QuickBooks Point of Sale (POS) from Intuit for $170 million USD.

Shopify has been profitable since 2015. In 2016 it reported a net income of $28.6 million USD with $344 million in revenue and in 2017 it reported a net income of $60.0 million with $673 million in revenue.”

Shopify shares have continued to perform well since the IPO The share price grew from an opening price of $28 per share to a high of $173 per share by the end of trading on July 1st 2015 (the first day of public trading).However, the price fell sharply in the following weeks and continued to languish around the go lelunti $60 level until it began  arobustrally in the latter part of the year .The price reached an all -time high in May 2019 at $159 per share but pulled back sharply with the overall slow down in e-commerce growth in the second half of the year .
