What Happens if I Change My Shopify Theme?

Last updated on January 4, 2023 @ 6:27 am

There are a few things that happen when you change your Shopify theme:

1. Your layout changes. This is the most obvious change that happens when you switch themes.

The new theme will have a different layout than your old theme, which may take some getting used to. But don’t worry, you can always change it back if you don’t like the new layout.

2. Your color scheme changes. This is another big change that can happen when you switch themes.

The new theme will have a different color scheme than your old theme, which may take some getting used to. But don’t worry, you can always change it back if you don’t like the new color scheme.

3. Your fonts change.

The new theme will have different fonts than your old theme, which may take some getting used to. But don’t worry, you can always change it back if you don’t like the new fonts.

4. Your menus change.

The new theme will have different menus than your old theme, which may take some getting used to. But don’t worry, you can always change it back if you don’t like the new menus.

5. Your photos might look different.

If your photos are stored in Shopify’s CDN (Content Delivery Network), they might look different on your website after changing themes. This is because each Shopify theme has its own photo size settings. So if your old theme had smaller photo size settings than your new theme, your photos might appear stretched or blurry after changing themes.

6. Your customizations might be lost. If you made any customizations to your old theme (such as adding custom CSS or modifying the code), those customizations will be lost when you switch to a new theme. So if you want to keep those customizations, you’ll need to add them back after changing themes.

7. You might need to reconfigure some settings. Some Shopify settings are specific to certain themes (such as the “Product Page” setting in the “Theme Settings” section). So if you switch to a new theme, those settings will be reset and you’ll need to reconfigure them again.

PRO TIP: If you change your Shopify theme, your existing content will not be carried over to the new theme. This includes your products, pages, blog posts, and any other content you have on your site. Be sure to export any content you want to keep before changing your theme.
