What is the Domain Name System (DNS) for Shopify?

The Domain Name System (DNS) is the phonebook of the Internet. It’s a distributed database that translates human-readable domain names (like Shopify.com) into numerical IP addresses (like 23.227.38.32).

PRO TIP: DNS (Domain Name System) is a system that converts human-readable website names into computer-readable numeric IP addresses. Shopify is a platform for businesses to create an online store. When you type in www.shopify.com, your computer will ask a DNS server to look up the IP address for that domain name and connect you to the website.

If you are planning on setting up a Shopify store, it is important to make sure that your DNS settings are correct. Incorrect DNS settings can cause your store to be inaccessible or slow.

When you type a domain name into your web browser, your computer contacts a DNS server to look up the IP address for that domain. Once it has the IP address, your browser connects to the website’s server at that address and downloads the website.

Shopify uses DNS to route traffic to the correct server when a customer visits your store. For example, when a customer types www.example.com into their web browser, DNS routes them to Shopify’s servers where they can view your store’s content.

You can think of DNS as a switchboard that connects people who type in your domain name with your Shopify store. Without DNS, people would have to remember your store’s IP address instead of your domain name in order to find your site.
