Is Figma an App?

Last updated on September 28, 2022 @ 8:12 pm

Figma is a vector graphics editor and design tool, developed by American software company Figma, Inc. It is available in both web-based and desktop versions.

The web-based version can be used on any operating system, while the desktop version is currently only available for macOS. Figma is used by designers at companies like Google, Facebook, Netflix, Uber, and Airbnb.

Figma has been described as “the Google Docs of design tools” due to its real-time collaboration features. Figma is also similar to Adobe XD and Sketch in that it offers vector-based design tools for interface design, icon design, and wireframing.

PRO TIP: Figma is not an app, it is a web-based design tool. If you are looking for an app, there are many other options available.

However, Figma differentiates itself from these other tools by offering its users the ability to use the same file across multiple devices and platforms. For example, a user can start designing on their laptop in the morning, and then continue working on their phone later in the day. This cross-platform compatibility is possible because Figma uses the web browser as its runtime environment.

So is Figma an app? The answer is both yes and no.

While Figma does offer a desktop app for Mac users, the primary way to use Figma is through its web-based interface. This means that Figma can be used on any operating system, making it more accessible than other design tools that are tied to specific platforms.
