How Do You Override a Component in Figma?

Designers often find themselves in a bind when it comes to working with clients who have very specific requests. In these cases, designers need to be able to override certain aspects of their design in order to make changes that the client is asking for.

Figma makes this process easy with its component override feature.

In Figma, a component is an object that can be reused multiple times within a design. Once a component has been created, it can be overridden to change its appearance or behavior without affecting other instances of that component.

To override a component in Figma, first select the component that you want to change. Then, click on the “Overrides” tab in the right sidebar.

From here, you can change any property of the component that you like. Any changes that you make will only affect the selected instance of the component, not all instances of that component.

PRO TIP: If you are not careful, overriding a component in Figma can lead to unexpected results. Make sure you know what you are doing before you override a component, and be prepared for the possibility that your changes may not work as expected.

For example, let’s say you have a button component that is used throughout your design. Normally, this button would have a light blue background and white text.

However, your client has asked for the button to have a green background with black text in one specific instance. To do this, you would simply override the “Background” and “Text” properties in the “Overrides” tab. Your changes will only affect the selected button, not all buttons in your design.

The “Overrides” tab is a powerful tool that gives designers a lot of flexibility when working with clients. By being able to override components, designers can make changes that their clients are asking for without affecting other parts of their design.

Component overriding is a great way to make specific changes to your design without affecting other parts of it. By using the “Overrides” tab in Figma, you can easily change any property of a component to meet your needs.
