How Do I Use Developer Mode in Squarespace?

As a Squarespace user, you may have come across the term “Developer Mode” and wondered what it is and how to use it. Developer Mode is a set of tools that can be used to make customizations to your Squarespace site.

In order to use Developer Mode, you will need to be on a paid plan. Once you are on a paid plan, you can enable Developer Mode by going to Settings > Advanced > Developer Mode.

Once Developer Mode is enabled, you will be able to access the Code Block Editor, which allows you to add custom HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to your site. You can also use the Inspector tool to view and edit the HTML and CSS of your site.

PRO TIP: If you are not a developer, we recommend that you do not use developer mode in Squarespace. Doing so could result in your site looking broken or unfinished, and could cause problems with your site’s code.

If you are not a developer or are not familiar with coding, you may be wondering why you would need to use Developer Mode. One reason you may want to use Developer Mode is to add custom code snippets to your site.

For example, you may want to add a Google Maps widget or a social media feed. While there are many Squarespace plugins that allow you to add these types of features to your site, sometimes it can be helpful to add the code directly into your site. This way, you have more control over how the code behaves and looks on your site.

Another reason you may want to use Developer Mode is to make styling changes to your site. While Squarespace does allow you to change the styling of your site without knowing any code, sometimes it can be helpful to have more control over the CSS of your site. For example, if you want to change the color of all the links on your site, you can do so by adding a custom CSS rule in the Code Block Editor.

If you are comfortable working with code and want more control over how your Squarespace site looks and behaves, then Developer Mode is a great option for you.
