First, let’s look at the fees UpWork charges.
UpWork takes a 20% cut of your earnings for the first $500 you bill with a client. After that, they take a 10% cut. So, if you bill a client $1000, UpWork will take $200 as their fee.
In addition to the fees they charge, UpWork also has what’s called a “service fee.” This is an additional 2.75% fee that’s charged on top of your earnings. So, if you bill a client $1000, UpWork will take an additional $27.50 as their service fee.
Now that we’ve looked at the fees UpWork charges, let’s look at how much you can expect to make as a freelancer.
As I mentioned before, your experience and skills will play a big role in how much you can make. But in general, most freelancers on UpWork charge between $20 and $40 per hour.
So, if we use the low end of that range (charging $20 per hour), and we assume that you’ll work 40 hours per week, that means you’ll make $800 per week before taxes and fees. After taxes and fees, you’ll take home around $700 per week – or $3,600 per month.
Of course, this is just a rough estimate. And if you’re an experienced freelancer with in-demand skills, you could easily make double or triple this amount. But this should give you a general idea of how much it costs to freelance on UpWork.
