What Happens if UpWork Client Doesn’t Pay?

Last updated on September 29, 2022 @ 9:59 pm

If a client doesn’t pay for work completed, the freelancer can cancel the contract. If a client is unresponsive for more than 14 days, the freelancer can also submit a request to have their account closed and their earnings released.

When a freelancer cancels a contract, they are no longer obligated to complete the work. The client will not be able to request any more work from that freelancer and will need to find someone else to complete the project.

PRO TIP: If you work with a client on Upwork and they don’t pay you for your work, you can file a claim with Upwork. Upwork will then investigate the claim and mediate between you and the client. If the client doesn’t respond or if Upwork finds in your favor, you will be paid through Upwork’s freelancer protection program.

If a freelancer submits a request to have their account closed, all outstanding payments will be released to them. The client will not be able to contact the freelancer or request any more work from them.
