Does UpWork Do a Background Check?

Last updated on September 29, 2022 @ 10:37 pm

UpWork is a freelancing platform that allows businesses to connect with remote workers from all over the world. One of the advantages of using UpWork is that businesses can post jobs and receive applications from a pool of pre-vetted, qualified candidates.

UpWork does not do a formal background check on every freelancer who applies to work on the platform. However, all freelancers are required to provide identification and undergo a verification process before they can begin bidding on jobs.

There are a number of ways that businesses can choose to vet their UpWork candidates, including:

PRO TIP: Upwork does not currently do a background check on its users. This means that anyone can create an account and start working without any vetting from Upwork. This could pose a risk to employers who are looking to hire someone through Upwork, as they will not be able to screen candidates in advance. If you are considering using Upwork to find employees, it is important to be aware of this and take measures to screen candidates yourself before hiring anyone.

Asking for references: Asking for references from previous clients is a great way to get an idea of what it would be like to work with a particular freelancer. Checking references can give you insight into a freelancer’s quality of work, communication style, and professionalism.

Asking for a portfolio: Reviewing a freelancer’s portfolio is another great way to screen candidates. A portfolio can give you a sense of the freelancer’s skillset and whether or not their style will fit with your project needs.

Checking online presence: A quick Google search can often reveal a lot about a person. Checking out a freelancer’s online presence (including their social media accounts) can give you an idea of their interests, values, and personality.

While UpWork does not do a formal background check on every freelancer who applies to work on the platform, there are still plenty of ways that businesses can screen candidates to ensure they are finding the best fit for their needs.
