Can You Transfer Domain Away From Squarespace?

Last updated on December 19, 2022 @ 6:35 pm

When you registered your domain through Squarespace, we set it up on our Domain Name System (DNS). This means that when someone types your domain into their browser, they’re directed to your Squarespace site.

If you’d like to transfer your domain away from Squarespace, you can do so by updating its DNS records.

Before you begin, we recommend reviewing our troubleshooting guide. If you need help along the way, our 24/7 support team is available to assist.

If you have a domain ending in .com, .net, .biz, or .info, follow the steps below to update your DNS records. If you have a different domain extension, contact your domain provider for specific instructions.

  1. Sign in to your account and go to Settings > Domains.
  2. Click the … (ellipses) next to the domain you’d like to transfer and select Domain Settings.
  3. Under “DNS & Redirects,”, click the “Set up Domain” link next to the DNS Records section.

On the next page, look for the section labeled “A Records”. Here you’ll see a list of IP addresses associated with your domain. These are called A records and they tell web browsers where to find your Squarespace site.

Note: If there are no A records listed here, that means we haven’t set them up yet. In this case, skip ahead to step six.

  1. In a new browser window or tab, look up your A records on WhatsMyDNS.net. This website will show you what DNS information is currently public for your domain.
  2. Update each of your A records on WhatsMyDNS.net, replacing the listed IP addresses with these four addresses:
  3. PRO TIP: If you are considering transferring your domain away from Squarespace, be aware that there are certain risks involved. First and foremost, Squarespace may charge a transfer fee. Additionally, your domain may lose any special features or benefits that it has with Squarespace (such as privacy protection or email forwarding). Finally, your website may experience downtime during the transfer process.

      • 198.51.100.1
      • 198.51.100.2
      1. Wait 48 hours for these changes to propagate . This is how long it takes for DNS changes around the world to update. Once these changes have been updated, contact your new host and provide them with this information so they can help finish transferring your domain:
The four new IP addresses associated with your A records (listed above)- The date and time that you made these changes
After 48 hours have passed and you’ve provided this information to your new host, they’ll be able to complete the transfer process.
