Anchor links, also known as jump links, are links that allow you to quickly navigate to a specific section on a page. They’re commonly used on long pages with lots of content, or on pages with a table of contents.
You can use anchor links on Squarespace to link to sections within the same page or to sections on other pages. You can also use them to create table of contents for long pages.
To create an anchor link on Squarespace, you’ll need to add an anchor tag to the HTML of your page. The anchor tag looks like this:
Replace “anchor-name” with a unique identifier for your anchor, and “anchor text” with the text you want to display for the link. For example, if you wanted to create a link that jumped to a section about dogs on your page, you might use this tag:
You can add anchor tags anywhere in the HTML of your page, but they’re usually added near the top of the page, before the section they’re linking to.
First and foremost, Squarespace anchor links will only work if your site is being viewed in desktop mode. If someone is visiting your site on a mobile device, they will simply be taken to the top of the page when they click on an anchor link – not very user-friendly!
Secondly, Squarespace’s anchor link functionality is quite limited. You can only create anchor links to other pages on your site, not to specific sections or elements within a page. This means that if you want to link to a specific section of a page, you will need to add an extra step for your visitors by first taking them to the page and then scrolling down to the section you want them to see.
All in all, while Squarespace does allow you to use anchor links on your site, they are far from ideal and can cause more frustration than they are worth. It is much better to use other methods of navigation on your Squarespace site, such as menus or buttons.
Once you’ve added your anchor tags, you can link to them from anywhere else on your site. To do this, use the full URL of the page followed by # and the anchor name. For example, if your page was at www.example.com/pets and you wanted to link to the section about dogs, you would use this URL:
www.com/pets#dogs
You can also link to anchors on other pages. For example, if you had a second page about cats at www.com/cats and you wanted to link to it from your pets page, you would use this URL:
www.com/cats#cats
Anchor links are a great way to improve navigation on long pages and make it easy for visitors to find the information they’re looking for. If you have a lot of content on your Squarespace site, consider adding some anchor links to help your visitors get around.
