Does UpWork Take a Commission?

As a freelancer, you’re always looking for ways to maximize your earnings. So when you’re considering using a platform like UpWork, you’re probably wondering – does UpWork take a commission

PRO TIP: Upwork does take a commission from freelancers’ earnings. The commission is 20% for the first $500 that a freelancer bills their client. The commission is then 10% for the next $9,500 that the freelancer bills their client.

The answer is yes, but it’s not as bad as you might think. UpWork charges a 10% fee on all earnings from projects completed through their platform. So if you bill a client $100 for a project, UpWork will keep $10 and you’ll get to keep the other $90.

Of course, this means that it’s in your best interest to try to negotiate higher rates with your clients since UpWork will be taking a percentage of your earnings. But overall, the platform is still a great way to find work and get paid as a freelancer.
