How Do Attributes Work in WooCommerce?

Attributes in WooCommerce are extra data that can be added to a product, such as size, color, or material. Attributes can be used to create variations of a product, such as different sizes or colors of the same product.

Attributes can also be used to provide additional information about a product, such as its weight or dimensions.

Attributes are set up in the WordPress admin under WooCommerce > Products > Attributes. First, you need to decide what kind of attribute you want to add to your products. There are three types of attributes:

  • Global attributes apply to all products in your store. Global attributes can be used to create variations of a product, such as different sizes or colors of the same product.
  • Product attributes only apply to specific products.

Product attributes can be used to provide additional information about a product, such as its weight or dimensions.

  • Variation attributes only apply to product variations. Variation attributes can be used to create variations of a product, such as different sizes or colors of the same product.

Once you have decided what kind of attribute you want to add, you need to give it a name. The name is for internal use only and will not be visible to customers. For example, if you are adding a color attribute, you might name it “color” or “colour”. Then, you need to add the slug. The slug is the URL-friendly version of the name and is what will be used in the URL when customers filter products by that attribute.

For example, if your attribute name is “color”, your slug might be “color” or “colour”. Finally, you need to choose whether this attribute should be visible on the product page. If you choose yes, customers will be able to see and filter by this attribute on the product page. If you choose no, only you and other store administrators will be able to see and use this attribute.

How Do Attributes Work in WooCommerce?

Attributes work by adding extra data to a product which can then be used for various purposes such as creating variations of a product or providing additional information about a product. Attributes are set up in the WordPress admin under WooCommerce > Products > Attributes and there are three types of attributes: global attributes, product attributes and variation attributes.

PRO TIP: If you are not familiar with WooCommerce, we recommend that you do not attempt to edit attributes in WooCommerce. Doing so could break your website.
