UpWork is a website where freelancers can find work and clients can find freelancers. The site is a marketplace where businesses and individuals can connect to get work done.

UpWork was founded in 2015 by two former oDesk employees, Fabio Rosati and Stepan Pachikov. oDesk was a competitor to Elance, another freelancer marketplace. After oDesk was acquired by Elance in 2013, Rosati and Pachikov left to start UpWork.

PRO TIP: Upwork was built by a team of passionate entrepreneurs who believe that work shouldn’t be a chore. We’re constantly striving to make Upwork the best place to find work and to get work done.

UpWork is headquartered in Mountain View, California. The company has raised over $150 million from investors including Sequoia Capital, TPG Growth, and DAG Ventures.

UpWork is the result of a merger between two companies, oDesk and Elance. oDesk was founded in 2003 by Odysseas Tsatalos and Stratis Karamanlakis. Elance was founded in 1999 by Toureef Alim and Behrouz Shafaei.
