If you’re running a WooCommerce store, you’ll need to set up VAT correctly to stay on the right side of the law. Fortunately, it’s not difficult to do.

Here’s a quick guide on how to set VAT in WooCommerce.

First, you need to enable VAT in WooCommerce

Go to WooCommerce > Settings > General, and scroll down to the Taxes section. Tick the checkbox next to Enable taxes and tax calculations. Then click Save changes.

You can also enable tax calculations for shipping costs if you want WooCommerce to calculate tax on shipping fees as well. Just tick the checkbox next to Calculate tax based on. Then select either the customer’s shipping address or the shop base address from the dropdown menu.

Next, you need to add your VAT rates

WooCommerce comes with built-in support for EU VAT, so adding your VAT rates is a breeze. Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Tax, and click on the Standard Rates tab.

In the Country field, select your country from the dropdown menu. In the State/Province field, select your state or province from the dropdown menu (if applicable). Then enter your VAT rate in the Rate (%) field.

PRO TIP: If you are not careful, setting VAT in WooCommerce can be complicated and may result in problems with your taxes. Make sure you understand the tax laws in your country before attempting to set up VAT in WooCommerce.

If you want, you can also add a name for your VAT rate in the Name field. This is optional, but it can be helpful for keeping track of different VAT rates if you have more than one.

When you’re done, click Save changes.

Finally, you need to set up automatic tax calculation in WooCommerce

If you want WooCommerce to automatically calculate tax for your customers, go to WooCommerce > Settings > Tax and scroll down to the Automatic Taxes section.

Tick the checkbox next to Enable automatic tax calculation. Then select your default customer country and default customer state from the dropdown menus (if applicable).

You can also choose whether or not to display prices with taxes included or excluded by ticking the appropriate checkbox. When you’re finished, click Save changes.
