Is There GST on UpWork?

Last updated on September 30, 2022 @ 9:01 pm

As of July 1, 2017, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) applies to all sales of digital products and services in Australia, including those made through UpWork. This means that GST is now charged on all fees earned by Australian freelancers through UpWork, at a rate of 10%.

If you are an Australian freelancer, you will need to register for GST with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Once you have registered, you will need to add your GST number to your UpWork profile, under the ‘Settings’ tab. You can then start charging GST on your invoices.

PRO TIP: There is no Goods and Services Tax (GST) on Upwork. However, if you are based in Australia and you use Upwork to buy services from overseas, you may be required to pay GST on those services.

If you are based outside of Australia, you will not be charged GST on your earnings through UpWork. However, if you provide services to clients in Australia, you may need to charge GST on those services. Please check with the ATO for more information.
