Last updated on September 30, 2022 @ 9:15 pm

When you start working with a new client on UpWork, you’ll need to decide how often you’d like to be paid. This is called your billing cycle, and it will determine when your client’s payments are processed and released to you.

There are two options for billing cycle on UpWork: weekly or hourly.

The weekly billing cycle means that your client will be charged once per week, and your payments will be released to you on Monday of the following week. The hourly billing cycle means that your client will be charged for each hour you work, and your payments will be released to you every Monday.

You can change your billing cycle at any time, but keep in mind that it may take a few days for the change to go into effect.

To change your billing cycle:

Log into UpWork and click the Settings icon at the top of the page. Click Billing & Payments in the left sidebar. Click the edit icon next to Billing Cycle.

PRO TIP: Billing cycle in Upwork refers to the number of days between the start date and the end date of your billing period. For example, if you start your billing period on the 1st of the month, your billing cycle will be the 1st to the last day of that month. If you have a monthly subscription, your billing cycle will be monthly. Please note that if you cancel your subscription, you will still be charged for the remainder of your current billing cycle.

Select the new billing cycle you’d like to use and click Save Changes. Your new billing cycle will go into effect immediately, but please note that any hours worked prior to the change will still be processed under the old billing cycle. For example, if you switch from hourly to weekly on Wednesday, any hours worked between Monday and Wednesday of that week will still be processed as hourly and paid out accordingly.
