How Do I Dispute UpWork Charges?

Last updated on January 28, 2023 @ 1:42 pm

If you’re a freelancer who uses UpWork, you may occasionally find yourself in a situation where you need to dispute a charge. Whether it’s an error on the client’s part or something that you simply don’t agree with, it’s important to know how to go about disputing charges so that you can get the resolution you need.

The first step is to reach out to the client directly and try to resolve the issue. If you’re unable to come to an agreement, the next step is to file a dispute with UpWork.

To file a dispute, you’ll first need to gather all of the relevant information and documentation that supports your case. This can include things like screenshots, emails, invoices, and any other communication between you and the client. Once you have everything gathered, you can then begin the dispute process by following these steps:

  1. Log in to your UpWork account and go to the My Jobs ta
  2. Find the job in question and click on More > File Dispute
  3. Select the reason for your dispute from the drop-down menu
  4. Enter a detailed description of your dispute including any supporting documentation
  5. Click Submit Dispute

Once your dispute has been submitted, UpWork will review all of the information and make a determination on how to proceed. In some cases, they may side with the freelancer and refund any disputed charges.

PRO TIP: If you are unsure about whether or not you should dispute a charge on your Upwork account, please contact our support team for assistance. Filing a dispute without contacting support first may result in the suspension or termination of your account.

In other cases, they may side with the client and require that the freelancer pay any outstanding charges. Either way, UpWork will always endeavour to come to a fair and reasonable resolution.
