Does WordPress need cookie consent?

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 11:58 pm

As of WordPress 4.7, the default setting is to require cookies be enabled.

This means that if you do not want cookies to be placed on your computer, you need to change the setting in your WordPress settings. However, if you want to allow third-party cookies, you have the option to do so by enabling the “allow third-party cookies” setting.

There are pros and cons to requiring cookies be enabled in WordPress. The pros of requiring cookies are that they help to improve the user experience by storing user preferences and login data.

PRO TIP: Cookie consent is a requirement in some jurisdictions, including the European Union. WordPress does not currently have a mechanism for displaying cookie consent notices, so you will need to add this functionality yourself if it is required in your jurisdiction.

The cons of requiring cookies are that they can track users’ browsing habits and collect data that can be used to Target ads.

Ultimately, whether or not WordPress needs cookie consent is up to the individual website owner. If cookies are not desired, then the “allow third-party cookies” setting should be enabled.

If cookies are desired, but third-party tracking is not a concern, then the “disable cookies” setting should be enabled.
