Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems.

Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants.” The company also provides services to businesses with physical stores, such as point of sale systems and retail packages.

In 2013, Shopify was named Ottawa’s Fastest Growing Company by the Ottawa Business Journal.

In 2015, Shopify ranked first in Canada in the Deloitte Technology Fast 50, an annual ranking of the country’s fastest-growing technology companies.

Shopify has been growing rapidly since it was founded in 2004. In 2016, it surpassed $10 billion in gross merchandise volume processed on its platform. In 2018, Shopify announced that it had more than 800,000 merchants using its platform which represented $41 billion in GMV that had gone through its platform.

Shopify went public on the New York Stock Exchange in May 2015 under the ticker symbol “SHOP”. In September 2020 Shopify entered into an agreement to acquire 6 River Systems for $450 million.
