How Do I Customize a Category Widget in WooCommerce?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 9:07 pm

In WooCommerce, a category widget is a handy way to list your product categories and subcategories in the sidebar of your shop page. You can use this widget to help shoppers navigate your store and find the products they’re looking for. By default, the category widget lists all of your top-level categories and their subcategories. But what if you want to customize the widget to only show certain categories or subcategories?

Here’s how to customize a category widget in WooCommerce:

  1. First, log into your WordPress dashboard and go to Appearance > Widgets. You should see the WooCommerce Category widget listed on the right side of the screen.
  2. Next, drag and drop the WooCommerce Category widget into your sidebar.
  3. Now, you’ll need to configure the widget settings. In the Title field, you can enter a custom title for the widget.

For example, you might want to title it “Shop Categories” or “Product Categories”.

  4. In the Show hierarchy drop-down, you can choose whether to show the category hierarchy in the widget or not. By default, this setting is set to “Yes”, which will show all parent and child categories in a nested list. If you set it to “No”, only top-level categories will be shown.
  5. The next setting is for “Show post counts”. This will display the number of products that are in each category. If you have a lot of products in your store, you might want to leave this setting turned off so that the widget doesn’t get too long.
  6. The last setting is for “Show dropdown”. This will add a dropdown menu to the widget so that shoppers can choose from a list of all your categories. This is handy if you have a lot of categories and subcategories, but it’s not necessary if you only have a few.

That’s all there is to customizing a category widget in WooCommerce! By following these steps, you can change the way the widget looks and functions to better suit your needs. PRO TIP: If you are not familiar with code or do not feel comfortable editing your theme files, we recommend that you consult with a developer or seek help from the WooCommerce support team. Making changes to your theme code can result in your site breaking if not done correctly.
