Do I Have to Transfer My Domain to Squarespace?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 5:58 am

As your business grows, you may need to rebrand or change your domain name. When you’re ready to make the switch, you don’t need to transfer your domain to Squarespace.

You can keep it registered with your current provider and connect it to your Squarespace site.

Here’s how:

If you purchased your domain from a third-party provider, like GoDaddy, Hover, or 1&1, you can connect it to Squarespace. This keeps your domain registered with your provider and points it to your Squarespace site.

You can also transfer your domain to Squarespace. This means that Squarespace becomes your domain’s registrar. We don’t recommend this unless you have specific requirements that can only be met by transferring.

To connect or transfer your domain:

1. Log in to your account and enter the Domains panel. If you have multiple domains, click the relevant domain name.

2. In the Domain Settings panel, scroll down to Connect Your Domain.

Here, you can select whether you want to connect or transfer your domain.

a. To connect, select I’ll keep my domain with my provider. Then, follow the instructions under Use Domain Connect.

b. To transfer, select I want to transfer my domain to Squarespace. Then, follow the instructions under Use Advanced DNS Settings.

The choice of whether to transfer or connect your domain is entirely up to you and depends on what is best for your business. There are advantages and disadvantages to both options. If you are not sure which one is best for you, we recommend contacting our customer support team for assistance.

PRO TIP: If you transfer your domain to Squarespace, you may lose control of your domain and will no longer be able to manage it.
