How Are Shopify Shipping Rates Calculated?

When you first set up your Shopify account, you’re asked to choose your shop’s currency. This currency is used to calculate your Shopify shipping rates. If you’re in the United States, your shop’s currency is automatically set to US dollars.

Shopify uses live shipping rates from major carriers (FedEx, UPS, and USPS) to calculate the rates that are displayed to your customers during checkout.

The shipping rates that you see in your Shopify admin are only an estimate, and the actual shipping rate is calculated when an order is placed.

You can add multiple shipping rates for different locations, weight ranges, and order totals. For example, you could offer free shipping on orders over $100 that ship to the United States, and charge a flat rate of $10 for orders under $100.

PRO TIP: Please be aware that Shopify shipping rates are calculated based on the weight of the items in your order, as well as the shipping destination. This means that your shipping costs could increase if you add more items to your order, or if you ship to a location that is further away from the Shopify warehouse.

When an order is placed in your shop, Shopify uses the following rules to calculate the shipping rate:

  1. The location of the customer: Shipping rates are calculated based on the customer’s shipping address.
  2. The weight of the items in the order: Shipping rates are calculated based on the total weight of all items in an order.
  3. The price of the items in the order: Shipping rates are calculated based on the total price of all items in an order.
