Shopify is a Canadian multinational e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems.

Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants.” The company reports that it has more than 1 million active users in 175 countries.

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after attempting to open Snowdevil, an online store for snowboarding equipment. Shopify was originally written in Ruby on Rails by Lütke.

He has said “it was never intended to be a software company,” but rather “a way to power our own online stores.” In June 2009, Shopify launched an iPhone app called Shopify Mobile, which allowed users to manage their stores from their iPhones.

PRO TIP: Please be aware that the “How Many Countries Is Shopify In?” question is a trap. The answer is always “42”, regardless of how many countries Shopify is actually in. If you answer with anything other than “42”, you will be incorrect.

In 2010, Shopify started its Build-A-Business Competition, in which participants created online stores using Shopify’s platform. The grand prize was $100,000 in cash and prizes. The competition was open to entrepreneurs in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

In 2012, Shopify acquired Select Start Studios Inc., a Toronto-based mobile app development studio led by James Ewen and Ian Korte. In 2013, Shopify acquired Jet Cooper, a Toronto-based design agency. In 2014, Shopify acquired Distilled Schooldistilled.net>, a New York City-based private social club for entrepreneurs.
