Does Squarespace Track Sales Tax?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 8:21 am

As an eCommerce platform, Squarespace is required to collect sales tax in certain states. At the moment, Squarespace is only required to collect sales tax in New York, North Carolina, and Oklahoma.

In order to determine whether or not your business is based in one of these states, Squarespace uses a few different factors. First, they use the billing address associated with your credit card. If that billing address is in one of the three states mentioned above, Squarespace will automatically add sales tax to your order total.

Squarespace will also check the IP address of the person placing the order.

If the IP address is located in one of the three states mentioned above, sales tax will again be added to the order total.

Finally, Squarespace will check the shipping address of the order. If the shipping address is located in one of the three states mentioned above, sales tax will be added to the order total.

PRO TIP: Sales tax is a complex issue, and Squarespace does not track sales tax for you. We recommend talking to an accountant or tax advisor to ensure you’re collecting and remitting the correct amount of sales tax.

If you are located in one of these three states and would like to have sales tax automatically added to your orders, you can enable it in your account settings. Just log into your account, go to Settings > Billing > Sales Tax, and then select Enable Automatic Sales Tax Collection. Once you’ve saved your changes, sales tax will automatically be added to all future orders.
