What Is a Shopify Private App?

As an ecommerce platform, Shopify is constantly innovating and expanding the ways that merchants can sell their products online. One of the newest additions to Shopify is the ability to create Private Apps. So, what is a Shopify Private App?

In short, a Shopify Private App is an app that is only accessible to the merchant who creates it, and is not listed in the Shopify App Store. This means that it can only be installed on a single shop, and cannot be sold or distributed to other merchants.

PRO TIP: A Shopify private app is an app that is created specifically for use by a single Shopify store. Private apps have access to all of a store’s data, including confidential information such as customer passwords and credit card numbers. They can also make changes to a store’s data, including adding or deleting products, changing prices, and modifying customer information.

Private apps are not reviewed by Shopify before they are installed on a store, and they are not subject to the same security requirements as public apps. This means that private apps can pose a serious security risk to Shopify stores. If you install a private app on your store, you should only do so from a trusted source and after carefully reviewing the app’s code for potential security vulnerabilities.

Private Apps are created using the same process as public apps, but they require a few extra steps in order to keep them private. First, you’ll need to generate a private app key and secret from your shop’s Admin area. Once you have those, you’ll need to include them in your app’s code when you’re setting up the authentication process.

Once you’ve done that, your app will be accessible only to you and any other users you invite to use it. That makes Private Apps ideal for situations where you need to create an app that will only be used by a small number of people, or where you want to test out an idea before making it available to the public.

If you’re a developer who is interested in creating a Shopify Private App for your own use or for a client, we’ve put together a quick guide on how to get started. Check it out here: [link].
