How Do I Transfer My Domain From GoDaddy to Shopify?

Last updated on October 2, 2022 @ 12:47 am

There are a few reasons you might want to transfer your domain from GoDaddy to Shopify. Maybe you’re not happy with the service you’re getting from GoDaddy, or maybe you just want to consolidate all of your online presence under one roof. Whatever the reason, the process is actually pretty straightforward and can be completed in just a few steps.

Before we get started, it’s important to note that there is a potential downside to transferring your domain. If your domain is less than 60 days old, you’ll likely have to pay a $10 fee toICANN.

Additionally, your domain will be locked for 60 days after the transfer, which means you won’t be able to make any changes during that time. So if you’re considering transferring your domain, make sure it’s something you’re absolutely sure about.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s get started!

PRO TIP: If you are considering transferring your domain from GoDaddy to Shopify, be sure to do your research first. There are a few things to keep in mind before making the switch, such as:

1. Make sure you have a current backup of your domain name’s settings and files.

2. Be aware that once you transfer your domain to Shopify, you will not be able to use it with GoDaddy anymore.

3. Be prepared to update your DNS settings and make changes to your email and website addresses that use your domain name.

4. Make sure you understand the terms of service for both GoDaddy and Shopify before making the transfer.

Step 1:
Get an authorization code from GoDaddy. In order to transfer your domain, you’ll need an authorization code from your current registrar. This is basically a password that verifies that you are the owner of the domain and that you have the authority to transfer it.

You can usually get this code by logging into your GoDaddy account and going to the “Domains” section. Once there, find the domain you want to transfer and click on the “Lock” icon next to it. In the pop-up window, select “Get Authorization Code.”

Step 2:
Initiate the transfer with Shopify. Now that you have your authorization code, head over to Shopify and log into your account (or create an account if you don’t have one already). Then, go to “Domains” under “Online Store” in your sidebar and click on “Transfer Existing Domain.”

Enter your domain name and hit continue. On the next page, select “I will update my DNS settings,” even if you’re not planning on doing that right away. Then enter your authorization code and hit continue again.

Step 3:
Change your DNS settings. This step is technically optional, but I would recommend doing it even if you’re not planning on using Shopify as your hosting platform right away. The reason for this is that it can take up to 72 hours for DNS changes to propagate, so by changing them now you can avoid any downtime later on.

To change your DNS settings, simply log back into your GoDaddy account and go to “My Products.” Then click on “DNS” next to your domain name and update the nameservers as follows:
NS1.Shopify.COM
NS2.COM
Once you’ve saved those changes, head back over to Shopify and click on “Continue.” You should now see a message saying that your DNS settings have been updated successfully!

Step 4:
UpdateGoDaddy’s contact information. The final step is to updateGoDaddy’s contact information for your domain so that Shopify will be listed as the registrant instead of GoDaddy. To do this, simply log back intoGoDaddy and go to “Domains.” Then find the domain name in question and click on the gear icon next to it.

In the drop-down menu, select “Manage Contact Info.” From there, update both the registrant contact information (which should be listed as “Shopify”) as well as the administrative contact information (which should be listed as yourself). Once those changes have been saved, head back over to Shopify one last time and click on “Continue.” That’s it! Your domain has now been successfully transferred from GoDaddyto Shopify.
