How Do I Use Google Adwords for Shopify?

Last updated on January 13, 2023 @ 3:41 am

Google AdWords is one of the most popular forms of online advertising, and for good reason. AdWords allows you to place ads on Google.com and millions of other websites across the web.

When someone searches for a keyword that you’ve selected, your ad has the chance to appear next to the search results. And you only pay when someone clicks on your ad!

If you have a Shopify store, you can use AdWords to drive traffic to your store and make more sales. In this article, we’ll show you how to set up a campaign in AdWords and give you some tips on getting the most out of your ads.

1. Set up a campaign

The first step is to set up a campaign in AdWords. You’ll need to create an account if you don’t have one already, and then sign in. Once you’re signed in, click on the “Campaigns” tab at the top of the page.

On the “Campaigns” page, click on the “+ New Campaign” button.

You’ll be given the option to choose between different types of campaigns. For our purposes, we want to choose the “Search Network only” option.

On the next page, you’ll need to fill out some information about your campaign. Give your campaign a name, and then select your country and language.

PRO TIP: Google Adwords can be a great tool to help promote your Shopify store, but it can also be a costly one. Be sure to set a budget and stick to it, or you could end up spending more money than you make in sales. Also, be sure to track your results so you can see which keywords and ads are working best for you.

Under “Budget,” you can either choose to set a daily budget or a lifetime budget. A lifetime budget is a good option if you want to set an overall spending limit for your campaign. A daily budget is a good option if you want more control over how much you spend each day.

Finally, under “Delivery method,” choose “Standard delivery.” This will ensure that your ads are shown evenly throughout the day.

Once you’ve filled out all of the required information, click on the “Save and Continue” button at the bottom of the page.

2. Choose your keywords

The next step is to choose which keywords you want your ad to show up for. To do this, click on the “Keywords” tab. “Keywords” are words or phrases that people type into Google when they’re searching for something.

For example, if someone is looking for “women’s shoes,” they might type in that phrase or something similar like “shoes for women.” As a general rule of thumb, “long-tail keywords” (keywords that are more specific) are better than short-tail keywords (keywords that are more general). That’s because they’re more likely to be used by people who are ready to buy something.

“Negative keywords” are words or phrases that you don’t want your ad to show up for. For example, if you sell women’s shoes, you might want to add “men’s” as a negative keyword so that your ad doesn’t show up when someone searches for “men’s shoes.”

“Broad match” is when your ad shows up for variations of your keyword, even if those variations aren’t exactly what you’re Targeting. For example, if someone searches for “shoes,” “women’s shoes,” or “shoes for women,” your ad might show up even if you’re only Targeting the keyword “women’s shoes.”

“Exact match” is when your ad only shows up when someone searches for an exact match of your keyword. So if someone searches for “women’s shoes,” your ad will show up. But if they search for “shoes,” “women’s clothing,” or anything else that isn’t an exact match of your keyword, then your ad won’t show up.

“Phrase match” is somewhere in between broad match and exact match. With phrase match, your ad will only show up when someone searches for an exact match of your keyword or a close variation of it. So if someone searches for “buy women’s shoes,” “women’s shoes near me,” or anything else that includes your keyword phrase (but isn’t an exact match), then your ad will show up.

To add keywords:

1.) On the “Keywords” tab, click on the “+ Keywords” button

2.) In the “Add keywords” box that appears, enter in each keyword or phrase that you want to Target

3.) For each keyword, select whether you want it to be broad match, phrase match, or exact match

4.) When you’re done adding keywords, click on the “Save and Continue” button at the bottom of the page

Tips:
– Start with a small list of around 10-20 keywords and then add more later
– Use negative keywords to exclude words or phrases that you don’t want your ad to show up for

3. Write your ad
Now it’s time to write your ad! On the “Ads” tab, click on “+ Ads.” You’ll need to create a separate ad for each variation that you want to test (more on this later).

In the “Add ads” box that appears:

1.) Enter in a headline (up to 30 characters)

2.) Enter in a description (up to 80 characters)

3.) Enter in a URL (this is usually just https://www..com/)

4.) Choose whether you want this ad to appear on mobile devices

5.) When you’re done adding all of this information click on the blue “+ Extension” button

Now it’s time too add some extensions! Extensions are extra bits of information that can make your ads even more relevant and useful to potential customers.. There are many different types off extensions available including sitelink extensions, callout extensions, location extensions, call extensions, and more. For our purposes, we’re going ton focus on sitelink extensions. Sitelink @extensionsare links too other pages on your website that potential customers might find useful. For example, if you have a sale going on, you could add a link to your sale page as a sitelink extension. To add a sitelink extension:

2.) In the “Text@(required)” field, enter in the text that you want too display for the sitelink extension.

3.) In the destination URL field, enter in the URL of the page that you’re linking too.

4.) When you’re done adding site link extensions, click on the blue”+ Callout@extension” button.

5.) Repeat steps 2-4for each call out extension that you want too add.

6.) When you’re done adding all of your extensions click on the blue “+ Display@URL Options” button.

7.) Under the final URL field enter the URL of the page that you want to send people too when they click on your ad.

8.) Under the display URL field enter the domain name of your website.

9.) When you’re done entering in all of this information click on the blue Preview button.

10.) Review the ad to make sure that everything looks good.
