Why Is My Checkout Closed on Squarespace?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 10:02 am

If you’re using Squarespace to build your website, you may have noticed that the checkout feature is sometimes disabled. This can be frustrating, especially if you’re trying to take advantage of a sale or promotion. There are a few reasons why this may happen:

1. Your site is in Preview Mode

If you’re in the process of building your site, it’s likely that you’re in Preview Mode. This mode is designed for editing and previewing your site, and doesn’t allow visitors to make purchases. To enable checkout, you’ll need to exit Preview Mode by clicking the Exit Preview button in the top-right corner of your screen.

2. You don’t have any products set up

In order for the checkout feature to be enabled, you’ll need to add at least one product to your site. You can do this by going to the Products page in your site’s dashboard and clicking the Add Product button.

PRO TIP: If you are seeing a message that your checkout is closed on Squarespace, it may be for one of the following reasons:

1. Your account is on a free trial and has not yet been upgraded to a paid plan.

2. Your account has been cancelled or is otherwise inactive.

3. You are trying to checkout using an unsupported browser or device.

4. There may be an issue with your payment method.

5. You have reached your monthly transaction limit.

If you believe your checkout should be open and are still seeing this message, please contact Squarespace support for assistance.

3. Your payment gateway isn’t set up correctly

If you’re using a payment gateway like PayPal or Stripe, you’ll need to make sure it’s set up correctly before checkout will be enabled. You can do this by going to the Payment Settings page in your site’s dashboard and following the instructions for your chosen gateway.

4. You have an active subscription

If you have an active subscription with Squarespace, you won’t be able to use the checkout feature on your site. This is because we don’t allow transactions on sites that are being billed through our platform.

To use the checkout feature on your site, you’ll need to cancel your Squarespace subscription.
