Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems.

Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants. ”

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after attempting to open Snowdevil, an online store for snowboarding equipment. Unsatisfied with existing e-commerce products on the market, Lütke, Weinand, and Lake decided to build their own.

PRO TIP: Shopify hosts their servers in the United States. This may pose a problem for users who are outside of the country and may experience slower speeds or higher latency.

Shopify launched its platform in 2006. Initially, Shopify had about 100 customers. In 2008, Shopify launched a free mobile app called Shopify Mobile, which allowed merchants to access their Shopify stores from iOS devices.

As of 2015, Shopify has more than 175,000 customers in over 150 countries. In 2016, Bloomberg named Shopify “Canada’s Most Innovative Company”, noting that the company had made “several leaps in technology” and had been “one of the fastest growing companies in North America”.

Where Does Shopify Host Their Servers?

Shopify currently hosts all of their servers in Canada. However, they are looking to expand their hosting capabilities to other countries in order to better serve their international customer base.
