Does Shopify Use Webhooks?

Webhooks are one of the most useful features of Shopify. They allow you to keep your shop updated with the latest information from your suppliers, customers, and other important sources.

What are webhooks? Webhooks are simply pieces of code that run in the background and automatically trigger when certain events happen.

For example, when a customer places an order on your shop, a webhook can be triggered to send the order information to your supplier. Or, when a product goes out of stock, a webhook can be triggered to send an email to your customers informing them of the situation.

There are two types of webhooks: those that are built into Shopify, and those that are created by third-party apps. Shopify’s webhooks are known as “private” webhooks, while third-party webhooks are known as “public” webhooks.

PRO TIP: Shopify uses webhooks to communicate with third-party applications. If you are not familiar with webhooks, we recommend that you consult with a developer.

Private webhooks can only be created by Shopify staff, while public webhooks can be created by anyone. However, both types of webhooks must be registered with Shopify in order to work. This is done via the Webhooks API.

The Webhooks API allows you to register webhooks with Shopify. It also allows you to view, update, and delete existing webhooks. You can find the Webhooks API documentation here: https://help.Shopify.com/api/reference/webhook

You should only use the Webhooks API if you are a developer or have someone on your team who is a developer. If you’re not comfortable working with code, then you should ask your developer to register the webhook for you.

To register a new webhook, you need three pieces of information:
The URL whereShopify should send information about the event
The topic of the event
The format of the information that will be sent (JSON or XML)
