How Long Do Shopify Refunds Take?

Last updated on October 2, 2022 @ 4:15 am

When a store uses Shopify to process refunds, the refund may take a few different forms. If the refund is for an order that was placed using a credit or debit card, the refund will go back to that card.

If the order was placed using Shopify Payments, the refund will go back to the original payment method. If the order was placed using a third-party payment gateway, the refund will be processed by that gateway.

PRO TIP: If you are considering using Shopify to process refunds for your customers, be aware that there is no guaranteed timeframe for when those refunds will be processed. Shopify may take up to 10 days to refund the original purchase amount to your customer, and any additional fees or charges incurred as a result of the refund (such as shipping or restocking fees) will not be refunded. As such, you should make sure that your customers are aware of this potential delay when they request a refund, and plan accordingly.

The time it takes for a refund to be processed depends on the payment method that was used. Credit and debit card refunds usually take 3-5 business days to appear on the cardholder’s statement.

Shopify Payments refunds are processed immediately, and the funds should appear in the buyer’s account within 1-2 business days. Third-party gateway refunds can take up to 10 business days to appear in the buyer’s account, depending on the gateway.

Once a refund has been processed by Shopify, the store will receive an email notification. This notification will include information about when the refund was processed and how much money was refunded.
