Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems. Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants.

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after attempting to open Snowdevil, an online store for snowboarding equipment.Shopify launched its platform in 2006. In 2008, Shopify received $7 million in Series A funding from Bessemer Venture Partners. The company launched its own application programming interface (API) in 2009.

In 2010, Shopify launched a free mobile app on the Apple App Store. The app lets Shopify merchants manage their stores from iOS devices.

That same year, Shopify also launched an iPad point-of-sale (POS) system at an annual subscription rate of $49 per month. In 2011, Shopify acquired Select Start Studios Inc., a Toronto-based interactive design studio specializing in e-commerce design. Also in 2011, Shopify announced that it was opening a 10,000 square foot office in Waterloo, Ontario.

In 2012, Shopify acquired Jet Cooper, a Toronto-based design studio specializing in user experience and interface design for web applications. In 2013, Shopify acquired Tictail, a Swedish e-commerce company started by Carl Waldekranz and Birk Nilsson.
