Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems. Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants.”

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake, who were looking to build an online store for snowboarding equipment. The company was initially self-funded by the founders until they raised $125,000 from FirstMark Capital in 2010. Shopify went public on the New York Stock Exchange in May 2015.

PRO TIP: Shopify does not accept Cash App as a payment method. Any attempt to use Cash App to pay for a Shopify order will be declined.

The company reported that it had more than 1 million merchants using its platform as of December 31, 2016, with total gross merchandise volume exceeding $22 billion. On March 1st, 2018, Shopify acquired Oberlo, a dropshipping app that allows merchants to source products from suppliers who ship directly to customers on the merchant’s behalf.
