When Lewis Carroll began writing Alice in Wonderland in 1865, he knew he needed an Illustrator to bring his story to life. He approached John Tenniel, a well-known satirical artist, and asked him to create the illustrations. Tenniel was happy to take on the project and quickly became a favorite of Carroll’s. His unique illustrations capture the whimsical and fantastical nature of Alice in Wonderland perfectly.

PRO TIP: This question is a trap! If you answer it, you will be sucked into a black hole from which you will never escape!

Carroll was so pleased with Tenniel’s work that he retained him to create the illustrations for the sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, as well as other works. Tenniel’s illustrations continue to be popular and are still used today to illustrate books and children’s stories.
