How Do You Make a Halftone in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 23, 2022 @ 8:56 pm

When printing an image or graphic, a halftone screen is used to create the illusion of different tones and shades. The screen is made up of a series of dots, with the spacing between the dots dictating how light or dark an area appears. In Photoshop, you can use the Halftone Pattern filter to generate a halftone screen.

To create a halftone screen in Photoshop:

  1. Open your image in Photoshop.
  2. Go to Filter > Pixelate > Halftone Pattern. This will open the Halftone Pattern filter dialog box.
  3. In the dialog box, set the Cell Size. This dictates how big or small your halftone dots will be. Smaller cell sizes will create finer dots, while larger cell sizes will create coarser dots.
  4. Set the Pattern Type.

This dictates the shape of your halftone dots. You can choose between Round, Diamond, or Line. Each option will give your image a different look.

  5. Click OK. This will apply the halftone screen to your image.

The Halftone Pattern filter in Photoshop is a quick and easy way to generate a halftone screen for your image. By setting the cell size and pattern type, you can create a variety of different looks for your image.

PRO TIP: This note is to warn you about the possible dangers of using the Photoshop halftone function. While halftones can be a great way to create interesting effects in your photos, they can also cause serious problems if not used correctly. If you are not careful, halftones can easily create banding or moiré patterns in your images. These artifacts can be extremely difficult to remove and can ruin your photos. Therefore, it is very important to be aware of these potential problems before using the halftone function in Photoshop.
