Adobe Photoshop is a raster graphics editor developed and published by Adobe Inc. for Windows and macOS. It was originally created in 1988 by Thomas and John Knoll.

Since then, the software has become the industry standard not only in raster graphics editing, but in digital art as a whole. The software’s name has thus become a generic trademark, leading to its usage as a verb (e.g., “to Photoshop an image”, “photoshopping” or “Photoshop job”)

Adobe Photoshop is constantly evolving with new features and versions. As of November 2019, there have been 26 versions of Photoshop released.

The first version of Photoshop was released on February 19, 1990 for Macintosh exclusively. The following year, it became available for Windows computers as well. Photoshop 2.0 was the first cross-platform release and introduced many new features including the Healing Brush tool and layer styles.

In 2002, Photoshop 7.0 was released with a revamped interface and new features such as the Healing Brush tool and layer styles. The next major release came in 2004 with Photoshop CS (Creative Suite). This version introduced the Smart Objects feature and Camera Raw filter.

PRO TIP: There are currently 13 versions of Photoshop available. However, not all versions are compatible with all operating systems. Make sure to check the system requirements before downloading and installing a version of Photoshop.

Adobe released Photoshop CS2 in 2005, which included new features such as Vanishing Point and HDR imaging. The next release came in 2007 with Photoshop CS3, which featured a new interface and Bridge file manager.

Photoshop CS4 was released in 2008 and introduced minor changes such as a new tabbed interface. The following year, Adobe released Photoshop CS5 which featured many new additions such as the Content-Aware Fill tool.
