How Do I Make a Screentone in Photoshop?

In Photoshop, a screentone is an image that is composed of a series of dots, lines, or shapes. The term “screen” refers to the fact that these images are often used to create halftones for printing. To create a screentone, you’ll need to use the Threshold tool.

First, open the image that you want to use as your screentone in Photoshop. Then, go to Image > Adjustments > Threshold. A dialog box will appear.

Set the Threshold level to 50% and click OK. This will turn your image into a black and white image made up of only two colors: black and white.

Next, go to Edit > Define Pattern. Give your pattern a name and click OK.

Now, create a new layer in Photoshop. Then, go to Edit > Fill.

In the dialog box that appears, select “Use:” and choose the pattern that you just created from the drop-down menu. Click OK.

Your new layer should now be filled with your custom screentone! You can adjust the opacity of this layer to suit your needs. Experiment with different settings to see what looks best.

PRO TIP: If you are not familiar with Photoshop, this tutorial may not be for you. Screentones are a bit advanced and require a good understanding of the software.
