How Do You Use the Painterly Effect in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 12:16 am

The painterly effect is a popular way to style text in Photoshop. In this effect, the text appears as if it has been painted on the canvas. This can be achieved by using a brush tool to create a textured effect, or by using the smudge tool to create a more blended effect.

To create the painterly effect, first select the text layer in the layers panel. Then, choose the brush tool from the tools palette.

Select a soft round brush and set the size and hardness to 100%. Next, click on the “text” layer in the layers panel and choose “Layer Mask” from the “Add Layer Mask” menu.

PRO TIP: The Painterly Effect in Photoshop can be a great way to add some artistic flair to your photos. However, it’s important to use it sparingly, as too much can make your photos look overdone. When using the Painterly Effect, be sure to start with a lower opacity and build up slowly.

Now, simply paint over the text with the brush tool. The paint will not actually show up on the text layer, but it will create a mask that will allow you to smudge or blur the text.

To smudge the text, simply hold down the “Shift” key and drag the smudge tool over the text. To blur the text, use the “Gaussian Blur” filter under “Filter” in the menu bar.

Experiment with different brush sizes, hardness levels, and smudge strengths to find the perfect look for your project!
