How Do I Get the Selection Back in Photoshop?

If you’re anything like me, then you’re constantly opening and closing Photoshop to make small changes to images. And, if you’re also like me, then you know how annoying it is to have to reselect the same area every time. Well, there’s a way to keep your selection active even after you close Photoshop!

First, open up the image that you want to keep your selection on. Then, use the selection tool of your choice to select the area that you want to keep selected.

Once you have your selection made, go to the “Select” menu at the top of the screen and click on “Save Selection. ”

A dialogue box will appear asking you to name your selection. I like to name my selections something specific so that I can easily find them later.

For this example, I’ll name my selection “house. ”

After you name your selection and click “OK,” Photoshop will create a new channel in your Channels palette with your selection saved as an alpha channel. You can close Photoshop now and your selection will be waiting for you when you reopen the image.

PRO TIP: If you are using Photoshop and you accidentally click outside of the selection, you may lose your selection. To get the selection back, you can use the ‘Undo’ command or the ‘History’ panel.

To load your saved selection:

Open up the image that has your saved selection. Go to the Channels palette and click on the channel that has your saved selection (it will be labeled with the name you gave it). This will load your saved selection as a marching ants marquee around the area you originally selected.

And that’s all there is to it! Now you can easily keep track of complex selections and save yourself some time in Photoshop.
