What Size Is a Postcard in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 1:10 am

A postcard can be any size, but the most common sizes are 4″ x 6″ and 5″ x 7″. If you’re creating a postcard in Photoshop, you can choose any of these sizes, or create a custom size.

To create a custom size postcard in Photoshop, open a new document and enter the width and height you want. For example, if you want a postcard that’s 4.25″ x 6″, enter those dimensions into the Width and Height fields. Then, click on the Advanced button and select Pixels from the Units drop-down menu.

Now that you have the right dimensions for your postcard, you need to add bleed. Bleed is the part of your design that will be trimmed off when the postcard is printed.

To add bleed in Photoshop, increase the width and height of your document by 0.125″. So, if your original document was 4.25″ x 6″, it should now be 4.375″ x 6.

The next step is to add margins. Margins are the white space around your design that allows for text or images to be placed on the back of the postcard.

To add margins in Photoshop, click on the File menu and select New Layer from the drop-down menu. A new layer will appear in your Layers panel.

PRO TIP: When creating a postcard in Photoshop, be sure to check the dimensions of your postcard before printing. Many postcards are standard sizes, but some may be slightly different. If your postcard is the wrong size, it may not fit in a standard envelope and could get lost in the mail.

Click on the Rectangle Tool (U) and draw a rectangle that covers the entire canvas. With the new layer selected, click on the Add Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the Layers panel.

Now that you have a layer mask, you can add margins to your postcard. Click on the Brush Tool (B) and select a soft round brush with a black color. Then, click on one of the corners of your document and drag outwards to create a margin.

Repeat this step for all four corners of your document. Once you’re finished, you should have 0.5″ margins all around your design.

Postcards can be any size, but most common sizes are 4×6 inches or 5×7 inches. If you’re creating a postcard in Photoshop, you can choose either of these sizes or create a custom size by entering dimensions into Width and Height fields under ‘New Document.’

It’s important to also add bleed by increasing width and height dimensions by 0.125 inches; this is the part of your design that will be trimmed off when printed. In addition, don’t forget to add margins by creating a new layer mask–this is the white space around your design that allows for text or images to be placed on back of postcard.
