How Do You Create a Smoke Overlay in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 1:21 am

A smoke overlay is a great way to add some extra depth and interest to your photos. There are a few different ways to create one in Photoshop, but the most common method is to use a layer mask.

To create a smoke overlay, first, open up your image in Photoshop. Next, create a new layer and fill it with black.

PRO TIP: Please be aware that creating a smoke overlay in Photoshop can be dangerous if not done correctly. Smoke inhalation is one of the leading causes of death in house fires, so please use caution and follow the instructions carefully.

Then, go to the Filter menu and choose Render > Clouds. Once you’ve done that, set the layer mode to Screen.

Now you should have a nice smokey effect! If you want to adjust the opacity or add any other effects, you can do so by using the layer mask. To learn more about layer masks, check out this tutorial.

That’s all there is to it! With just a few simple steps, you can easily add a smoke overlay to your photos.
