Can You Descreen in Photoshop?

Assuming you have a scanned image of a printed piece, and the print is to be used on the web or in another electronic format, you’ll need to remove the screen that was used in the printing process. This is commonly referred to as “descreening.”

It’s a fairly simple process and only requires a few steps in Photoshop.

The first thing you need to do is convert the image to grayscale. You can do this by going to Image > Mode > Grayscale.

A dialogue box will pop up asking if you want to Discard Color Information. Click OK.

Now go to Filter > Noise > Despeckle. This will help remove some of the noise from the image caused by the scanning process.

PRO TIP: If you are using Photoshop to remove a screen from your image, be aware that this process can damage your image. Use a low opacity eraser tool to avoid this.

Once you’ve done that, go to Image > Adjustments > Levels and play around with the sliders until you’re happy with the results. This step is really a matter of taste and depends on the quality of your original scan.

The last step is optional, but if you want to sharpen the image a bit, go to Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask and play with the Amount, Radius and Threshold settings until you’re satisfied.
