How Do You Illuminate Faces in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 11:05 am

There are many ways to illuminate a face in Photoshop, but one of the most effective is to use the Dodge and Burn tools. These two tools can be used to subtly lighten and darken areas of an image, and when used correctly, can give a face a natural and realistic glow.

To use the Dodge and Burn tools, first create two new layers in your Photoshop document. One layer should be set to “Soft Light” blending mode, and the other should be set to “Overlay”. Next, select the Dodge tool from the toolbar (it looks like a small brush) and set the brush size and hardness to your liking. Then, simply paint over the areas of the face that you want to lighten.

Be sure to use very light strokes so that the effect is subtle. Finally, select the Burn tool (it looks like a small fire) and paint over the areas of the face that you want to darken. Again, use light strokes for a subtle effect.

PRO TIP: This article covers a method for adding artificial lighting to faces in Photoshop. This is an advanced technique that should only be attempted by experienced Photoshop users. If you are not comfortable with using Photoshop’s advanced features, you may want to skip this article.

By using these two simple techniques, you can easily add depth and dimension to a flat or boring photo. So get out there and start experimenting!
